Heading out for a ride on a wet winter morning might seem less appealing than a sunny summer spin, but thanks to advances in cycling kit it’s a lot easier than it used to be. Below is our check-list of cold weather essentials you’ll find on Shuttvr.com to help protect you from the elements this winter.
Essential kit for winter cycling
Baselayer
A good baselayer will provide a layer of warmth while absorbing and evaporating your sweat to keep you feeling warm and comfortable.
Shutt baselayers are designed to be a skintight fit with light compression allowing outer layers to fit smoothly and correctly with no bunching and wrinkling. The polyamide aids moisture transfer and helps to rapidly move moisture away from the skin making you feel dry and comfortable throughout your ride. For winter, you’ll need the long sleeve version, but many riders will use a baselayer all year round so we have a vest and short-sleeve option also available.
Long sleeve jersey
Depending on the weather, a good long sleeve jersey makes a great mid-layer or an outer layer.
Our Elsy women’s jersey, or men’s Aspin, are just perfect for the changing seasons. Made from lightweight, fleece lined, Nortex Dolimiti fabric to keep you warm, they are luxurious mid-season jerseys with full length zips, zip garages and a long, contoured hem with soft silicon gripper to stop it from riding up when you’re on the drops. Add an Aspin gilet when the temperature drops for the prefect winter setup.
Bib tights
A good pair of bib tights is a wise investment if you’re planning to ride through winter and Shutt’s Tourmalet tights are just the ticket.
Handmade in Italy, our Tourmalet Tights are produced using lightweight and resilient MITI Thermal Green Superoubaix, which is internally fleeced and fast wicking to keep you warm and dry whatever the weather. These bib tights have been designed to provide you the ultimate in comfort and performance, featuring an anatomic multi-panel design for just the right amount of stretch and support, plus a full Roubaix brace for extra warmth.
Gilet
Whilst a good Roubaix jersey will keep you warm, sometimes the winter wind can really bite. That’s where a gilet really comes into its own.
At Shutt we view a lightweight gilet as one of the most useful and versatile pieces of cycling kit you can own and our latest one is no exception. Designed for year-round use, it is windproof and features fabrics that are showerproof and breathable. Packs away small enough to live in your jersey pocket until it's needed.
We've packed our Aspin gilet with all the features you expect in a garment costing twice as much.
Waterproof jacket
When the heavens open a Roubaix isn’t going to help so Shutt developed our Descent Jacket for when it pours. Made from ultra-lightweight Crystal material, our Descent Jacket is waterproof and windproof whilst also being compact enough to pack into a jersey pocket until it's needed. Perfect for keeping you warm on Alpine descents, or the Sunday club ride.
Softshell jacket
As we head into Jan and the weather becomes too cold for a long sleeved jersey and gilet combo, a softshell jacket delivers the extra warmth and protection from wind and rain that you’ll need.
Shutt’s Gavia winter jacket is designed to cope with the worst the British weather can throw at you and will keep you riding throughout the colder months.
We tested the prototype through a full British winter in the Cotswolds and it lived up to all our expectations. The fabrics are breathable, water and windproof, so your body stays completely dry for a comfortable ride.
Gloves
Cold hands are a common problem for cyclist and at Shutt we’ve got you covered.
Our Softshell Gloves feature silicone printed palm grips and are made using wind resistant softshell material so they're stretchy and extremely comfortable. Easy to pull on and remove with a long elasticated wrist band. 3 layer windproof stretch fabrics with fleeced internal layer keep you snug and warm and a close fitting stretch knitted cuff is designed to fit over or under winter jersey sleeves. We’ve even added an electroconductive finger patch so you can use a smartphone without losing your fingers.
Overshoes
Cold feet can be a cyclist’s worst nightmare so a good set of overshoes really are a winter essential. Designed to resist the worst the British weather has to offer, our Superstretch Neoprene Overshoes are ideal for all but the coldest, most miserable winter days. Our innovative one-piece design means no more zip or Velcro failures and a product you can depend on for cold winter Sunday mornings.
Headover Scarf
A very versatile addition to your winter wardrobe is a Headover scarf or neckwarmer.
Shutt's Headover Scarves come in a variety of colours and are made from technical, stretchy, hardwearing fabric which optimises warmth and breathability.
The polyester microfibre construction wicks away moisture whilst remaining wind resistant. Stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer with this seamless and highly effective article of technical clothing that is soft and safe for use against sensitive skin. The lightweight, breathable fabric is machine washable, quick drying and exceptionally easy to care for.
We’ve been reliably informed that they look great on and make ideal gifts too.
Cap
Helmets are vital for safety and modern cycling style, but they don’t tend to keep your head very warm. So a cycling cap worn under your lid is just the ticket.
Shutt’s Team Cap features an improved multi panel design which ensures a great fit, even under your helmet.
